How Much Child Support Can You Receive?

Generally the non-custodial parent will be ordered to pay child support to the custodial parent to enable the custodial parent to meet day to day expenses of the child. Every state has its own guidelines for determining the amount of child support. All though these guidelines vary from state to state, some of them are common to all states. These include the income of the parents and the living expenses and needs of the child. Generally child support is calculated as a percentage of the paying parent’s income. Under certain circumstances, the amount can differ from the guidelines. The parents must submit details of their finances including their income and expenditure to the court before the court pass the child support order. The court will use the information to determine the amount of child support.

Parents’ Income

In all states the income of the parents is an important factor in determining the child support amount. You should therefore understand what is included in the calculation of income for determining the amount of child support.

Additional Considerations

While the state guidelines are important to the determination of child support amounts, the court can consider other factors too. The type of custody arrangement and college expenses can also affect the calculation of child support.
