Gay rights are a very controversial topic. Gay marriages are even more controversial. For many, the idea that same sex couples should be entitled to the same benefits as opposite sex couples is an issue of civil rights. Same sex couple must be entitled to be treated just like any other couple. For others, the question of same sex marriage is a moral issue. They find it immoral and against religious and moral principles. According to them same sex marriages undermine family values – opposite sex couples procreate, same sex couples cannot. Those favoring same sex marriages argue that procreation is not an important factor – the disabled, the infertile and the old can marry anyone they want and medical science has developed so such that it is possible to have biological children without having to get married.
Another emotional topic associated with same sex marriage is the issue of marriage ceremony or rather the fact that same sex couples can participate in a marriage ceremony. The question whether or not same sex couples should receive tax, estate and other benefits like opposite sex couple is another emotional issue.
While same sex marriages have been in existence for years, it is only recently that it has come out in the open. The 1993 Baehr v. Lewin case is seen as a landmark case regarding same sex marriages.
