Conservatorship
When an adult is unable to manage their own personal or financial affairs, a conservatorship may ultimately be necessary. We guide families through the legal process of appointing a conservator to ensure a loved one’s safety, dignity, and well-being, especially in times where affairs are critical and high priority.
A conservatorship is a court-supervised legal arrangement where a responsible person (the conservator) is appointed to care for another adult (the conservatee).
California law recognizes two main types:
Conservatorship of the Person: Manages personal needs such as healthcare, housing, and daily care.
Conservatorship of the Estate: Manages finances, property, and legal matters.
We can assist in deciding which type is most applicable to the situation.
Conservatorships are often necessary for:
Elderly individuals with conditions such as dementia or Alzheimer’s
Adults afflicted with severe disabilities or medical conditions
Situations involving financial abuse or neglect, such as taking advantage of an elder’s assets or money
We help families determine whether a conservatorship is appropriate and explore less restrictive alternatives when possible.
